Australia's Keith Urban has walked away empty-handed after leading the nominations at the 52nd Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Urban had been up for seven gongs, including entertainer of the year, male vocalist of the year and album of the year.

But these were instead awarded to Jason Aldean, Thomas Rhett and Miranda Lambert's "The Weight of These Wings" respectively.

The night kicked off with a tribute to Chuck Berry featuring Joe Walsh, Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley.

Urban performed Blue Ain't Your Colour and The Fighter as his actress wife Nicole Kidman sang and danced along.
