Mildura History: Editor 'Tarred and Feathered'
October 25: On this date 1921: A gang of men 'tarred and feathered' the editor of the "Mildura and Merbein Sun" newspaper...
10 men were later hauled before the 'Mildura Police Court' charged with grievous bodily harm on November 23 that year.
Grant Hervey ... originally from Melbourne ... lived in Sarnia Avenue Mildura at the time ... and told a court hearing his house was surrounded by between 50 and 100 men ... and he fled down Deakin Avenue under police guard.
But the road was blocked by a plank of wood and he was ambushed by a group of men ... he was beaten and thrown in another car and taken to the 'De Garis aerodrome' where he was forced to strip his clothes off and had hot tar painted on his body ... before being covered with feathers.
The offenders fled when police arrived.
