On Fire: Canberra Chilli Contest
There are two types of people … those who like hot and spicy food … and those who don’t.
But we all like watching people eat really hot food … don’t we?
A few brave people lined up for a chilli-eating contest in Canberra over the weekend … only one contestant was hospitalised …
Contestants worked their way up from standard red chilli to the so-called ‘Dixie death machine’ … the ‘Carolina Reaper’.
On the chilli measuring scale … typical chillis can rate between 1000 to 3500 Scoville heat units (SHU). The ‘Carolina Reaper’ measures about 1.5 million SHU.
Its extract is 2.5 million SHU and is labelled "hallucinator".
The eventual winner was Steve Diep … who looked a little red in the face when he held up the winner's trophy.
He’s told Fairfax he should listened to his mum … and not done it!
A word of caution … be prepared before you eat the ‘Carolina Reaper’… unlike these American women…..
Note to self – listen to mum next time!
Here’s how chilli-eating contests work…
