Anniversary: Mildura 'Easter Hoon Riot'
The year 1981 ... the date April 18 ... 91 people were arrested after hot rod fans took over streets in the city centre ... so they could use them for drag racing...
A crowd of around 3000 people dispersed during the night after local JP Roy Burr read the ‘Riot Act’ over the police PA system...
His reading of that Act allowed police to arrest anyone in the vicinity immediately.
Police reinforcements had been sent from Melbourne after trouble the night before ... youths had defied police orders and were pouring diesel oil on the road and doing burnouts!
The story appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald the following Monday (pictured).
Then Mayor Lloyd Beasy blamed the trouble on ‘too much booze ... and too little discipline’.
