There’s been an increase in breast screening testing numbers among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
In 2018, a partnership was formed between BreastScreen Victoria, the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) and Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO) to trial a cultural screening shawl with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
The Beautiful Shawl Project provides culturally appropriate and familiar shawls for women to wear during screenings, with the project being in Mildura in recent years.
There was an 83% increase in organisations involved in the project in the last financial year when compared to the previous 12 month period.
The Victorian Government says it’s working to drive down the gap in cancer survival rates in the state.
