A spate of recent fires has prompted a call for Sunraysia residents to correctly recycle used batteries over the holiday season.
The waste and recycling industry estimates more than 10,000 battery-related fires occur in Australia each year, with particular concern around rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Libby Chaplin from B-cycle says used batteries should never be thrown in the bin, but instead have their terminals taped-over and then taken to an approved collection point.
