Concerns over water purchase program

There are concerns the Federal Government’s new Voluntary Water Purchase Program will devastate regional irrigation communities across the Murray Darling Basin.

The amended the Murray Darling Basin Plan legislation to allow an extra 450 gigalitres of water to be recovered.

Labor’s draft framework consultation for its Restoring our Rivers Act still has three weeks left for locals to have their say.

Member for Mallee Anne Webster is encouraging farmers and irrigation communities to provide feedback on the mechanisms for feedback.

She says she’s worried river communities will become ghost towns when water’s ripped away from them.
