Andrew Constance has won Liberal Party endorsement to stand against Labor’s Fiona Phillips in Gilmore at the next Federal election.
And the former Bega MP and State Transport Minister said he’s taking a different approach to campaigning.
He says his focus is on unity.
“After 18 and a half years as a state minister and member I still do have a burning and passionate desire to give the best representation both nationally and for Gilmore and that’s why I’ve put myself forward,” Mr Constance said.
“The last thing that people want is a mouth full of politics and they’re not going to get it from me.
“This has to be an important campaign in so far as, it’s got to be positive and it’s got to be about the bipartisanship we can build across the region to deliver great outcomes.
Mr Constance was joined by Shoalhaven councillor and president of the Gilmore Liberal Federal Electorate Conference Paul Ell, Senator Jim Molan and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women Marise Payne at the announcement at Shoalhaven River wharf in Nowra on Monday (January 17).
“I’m going to bring to this campaign an energy, a unity, a passion that we’ve never seen before so that we continue to ensure that our region is served nationally and becomes and continues to become the envy of Australia.”
Mr Constance will challenge Labor’s Fiona Phillips, who holds the seat with a margin of just under three-percent.
Gilmore was held by the Liberals for more than two decades until the last election, when Mrs Phillips won the seat in a battle against Warren Mundine.
