A native fish, last seen in waters near Mildura three years ago, the first seen in the wild since 1929, has been released back into Victorian waterways.
The small-bodied olive perchlet was declared instinct in 1988, but the State Government says a conservation effort has seen two-hundred healthy adults released back into waters at Gunbower National Park last month.
It’s part of a long-term plan to re-populate the species into floodplain habitats through the Murray Corridor.
Genetically distinct varieties of the olive perchlet live in eastern NSW and in the western Murray-Darling catchment.
