Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, has raised a pressing question in Parliament on behalf of food producers across north-west Victoria.
The question, directed to the Minister for Agriculture, addresses the government’s recent decision to cut funding for the education and management of Queensland fruit fly, a move that threatens to cripple the region’s agriculture industry.
“Our local food producers are on the frontline in the fight against Queensland fruit fly, a pest that has the potential to devastate our multibillion-dollar agriculture industry,” Ms Benham said.
“With funding cuts to crucial education programs and pest management services, such as those provided by Sunraysia Pest Control, there is a serious risk to the future viability of our orchards and vineyards.”
“Our food producers deserve answers. They are concerned, and rightfully so, about how the government intends to address or eradicate Queensland fruit fly without the necessary funding.
“Without adequate support, we face serious economic repercussions, and potentially the loss of our region’s produce in interstate and export markets.”
“The need for a swift response and effective action from the government to prevent further risk to the region’s valuable food industry and its role in Victoria’s economy is vital and the Minister must act.”
