With Mildura tipped to reach 37 degrees today locals are being warned NOT to leave children, pets or vulnerable people alone in cars.
The RACV says temperatures in vehicles can climb rapidly, reaching over 70 degrees in just minutes.
In 2024, RACV received 653 calls from parents and carers seeking help to free children accidentally locked in vehicles.
RACV offers the following advice for motorists driving with children:
- Ensure windows are open before placing children in the car to prevent auto-locking, then close them once driving.
- Never let children play with keys.
- Minimise distractions when loading the car.
- Keep keys secure with a lanyard or clip.
If a child is accidentally locked in the car:
- Call 13 11 11 for RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance.
- For life-threatening situations, call 000 immediately.
- Stay calm, but act fast.
