Local concerns over proposed tax

There are concerns that Mildura’s accommodation providers will be hit hard by a proposed Holiday and Tourism Tax.

The seven-and-a-half per cent levy took a big step forward in Victoria’s Legislative Assembly last week.

Member for Mildura Jade Benham says the tax will impact accommodation options for tourists in areas including the north-west.

She says there’ll be a big price hike, but the bill also grants councils the authority to ban short stay accommodation altogether, or restrict the number of days properties can be listed on sites including Air BnB.
