Barrier Police are encouraging residents follow these tips and tricks to help you reduce the risk of overnight break-ins, especially when you’re at home:
1. Lock all doors and windows: Before heading to bed, double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked. Even small windows can be an entry point for intruders.
2. Use deadbolts and security bars: Install deadbolts on exterior doors, especially those on the ground floor.
3. Install motion sensor lights: Bright lights can deter potential intruders. Place motion sensor lights around the exterior of your home, particularly near entry points.
4. Keep valuables out of sight: Ensure that valuable items are not visible from windows, don’t leave valuables inside your vehicle. Use curtains or blinds to keep prying eyes away.
5. Set up a security system: Invest in a home security system with alarms and cameras. Modern systems can frequently be monitored via smartphone apps in real-time.
6. Trim overgrown shrubs: Keep bushes and trees trimmed to eliminate hiding spots.
7. Ensure your vehicle is secure: Always lock your vehicle before heading inside, even if it’s within your property.
