Snake breeding season commences

The Department for Environment and Water, South Australia, has issued a warning this snake breading season as the temperature starts to rise.

The start of breeding season has commenced for the slithering reptiles.

The Mallee is home to a number of Australian snakes, including both the eastern brown snake & tiger snake.

The department’s Principal Ecologist Dr Karl Hillyard says it was important to remember that while the most commonly seen snakes were venomous, they are generally shy and did not normally attack unless provoked.

Clearing rubbish and keeping grass low can deter snakes, however it’s important to note that snakes are protected native animals.
