Fyfe to see out career at Freo

Fyfe to see out career at Freo

FREMANTLE captain Nat Fyfe insists he never seriously considered joining a Melbourne-based club before re-signing with the Dockers until the end of 2023.

Fyfe is set to be a Docker for life after agreeing to a six-year contract extension.

It’s the longest contract extension in Fremantle’s AFL history, with the deal reportedly worth about $1.2 million per season.

The deal means 25-year-old Fyfe will play at least three more seasons under coach Ross Lyon, who is contracted with Fremantle until the end of season 2020.

Earlier this season, rumours were rife Fyfe was considering a big-money switch to a Melbourne-based club, with St Kilda thought to be the frontrunner.

But the 2015 Brownlow medallist denied that was the case, even though he would have landed significantly more money that way.

“Other than the prospect sort of wandering across my conscious, no real thought was ever put into moving to another club,” Fyfe said on Monday.

“I can say that really genuinely. All the speculation floating around was mostly untrue, and it was quite interesting to watch.

“Fremantle is in a great position with their facilities and the ability to play in this new stadium (next year). There’s no other place I’d want to play my footy.”

Fyfe hopes to win a premiership with Fremantle before his deal expires.

And he is confident it can be achieved following the emergence of a host of talented players this season.

“I think we’ve got a group who are really willing to learn and aren’t interested in waiting around for their careers to follow a natural trajectory,” Fyfe said.

“Clearly, we want to deliver Fremantle their first premiership. It’s a really lofty and ambitious goal. We’re all going to work as hard as we can towards that.”

With Fyfe now locked away, much of the focus of the AFL world will switch to out-of-contract Richmond star Dustin Martin.

Martin is a restricted free agent, and his hot form could be rewarded with offers upward of $1.3 million per season by rival clubs.
